Notices & Updates
How the university announces its activities, how to read an announcement, and how not to miss one.
What gets announced
Anything the university runs and wants an audience for is announced before it happens: conferences, workshops, seminars, training courses, competitions, exhibitions, fixtures, ceremonies and community activities. An announcement goes up once the activity is confirmed — its subject, who it is for, when and where it is held, and what to do if you want a place.
Where announcements appear
- events — the full list, upcoming first. This is the authoritative version. If two sources disagree, this one is the one to act on.
- news — the longer piece, before a large activity and again afterwards.
- Department and office noticeboards on campus, for activities aimed at one programme or one year.
- Where an activity is also carried on the university's social accounts, the entry on this site remains the version to check for changes.
Reading an announcement
Every announcement should tell you five things: what it is, who may attend, when and where, whether you must register and by when, and who to ask. If one of those is missing, ask the office named on the entry before you make arrangements rather than assuming.
Where a closing date, a limit on places or a fee applies, it is stated in the announcement itself. Nothing on any other page overrides it.
How to be notified
- Look at events at the start of each week, and again before each term begins — that is when most of a term's activities are posted.
- If your department keeps its own list for its seminars and workshops, ask its office to put you on it.
- Read the noticeboard outside your department. Activities meant for one year group are often posted there and nowhere else.
- Register as soon as registration opens, for anything you cannot afford to miss. Do not rely on being reminded individually.
Announcing an activity
Staff and registered student clubs follow the same route:
- Confirm the date, the room and who is responsible for running it.
- Write it up short: title, purpose, audience, whether registration is needed and how.
- Submit it through the college or the office that oversees the activity, which forwards it for publication.
- Check the published entry, and report any change at once. A cancellation or a room change that is not posted sends people to an empty room.
